Feb. 28, 2005
Def Oscar Jam

With no surprises, the 77th annual Academy Awards were split between The Aviator (five awards) and Million Dollar Baby (four awards). Hilary "I'm just a girl from a trailer park" Swank won her second Best Actress award. Jamie Foxx won Best Actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles, who with the Golden Globes, Grammys and Oscars is having the best career year of his life in death. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio went home empty-handed, but Leo can stand some bad luck with Giselle Bundchen to keep him warm at nights.

After the controversy surrounding his choice as Oscar emcee and the Drudge-designed trouble over remarks made last week, just how dangerous was Chris Rock? The network was ready with the five second delay, but Rock's starter of "sit yo' asses down" and presenter Robin Williams' musing about Disney's Chip and Dale "coveting nuts" was as naughty as it got. Unless you count dissing Jude Law. Rock brought life to the ceremony, which suffered from a boring list of nominees and films. The winners were easy to predict and among the general public there was not much excitement for the nominated films. As Rock demonstrated with his visit to the Magic Johnson Theatres. The distance between Academy members and ordinary people was further strained by the first song of the night being performed in French for a film that no one saw (The Chorus). What's next, a tribute to Jean Cocteau?

To spice up the lamer awards, there was an American Idol style line-up and call-out for the winner. The producers paired up Hollywood's most glamorous stars, Halle Berry, Pierce Brosnan, DiCaprio, Natalie Portman, with the most average of looking nominees for these awards. Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz announced the winners for best ess-sound mixing, which would have sounded lovely had it gone to ess-Spiderman 2.

Since the Oscars are as much fashion as awards show, who were the hits and misses?
Best-dressed Female: Halle Berry, Natalie Portman (tie)
Worst-dressed Female: Renée Zellweger
Best-dressed Male:
Sean Combs (his Sean John line provided Chris Rock's tuxedo as well)
Worst-dressed Male: Johnny Depp, Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows (tie)
