The focus of this site is all about society. Society as it is brought to life through the arts, news and trends. To avoid nearsightedness, you have to look at the big picture - culture at large - and how it surrounds everything we do and experience. This section is devoted to observations, asking questions and drawing conclusions when watching shit happen, thus the title of:

Why We Go Retro

2005 sure feels a lot like 1985. I mean all the cool bands are being compared to either Duran Duran or The Cure. Desperate Housewives is Dynasty in the suburbs. And coming soon are big screen remakes of Miami Vice, Dallas, Magnum P.I. and The Dukes of Hazzard. In your lifetime, or by watching VH1 consistently, you will probably see the same fad come back two or three times. Going retro allows for admiration of an old fad while at the same time laughing about it.

How Cell Phones Have Revised Reality

Sometimes when I watch people in old shows and movies, I think how much easier it would have been if they had cell phones. For instance, when the Colombians ambush Crockett and Tubbs from Miami Vice and they need to find a pay phone to call for back up. Or how a cell would have helped those confusing situations on Three’s Company, not to mention those poor kids in the Friday the 13th movies. Under our noses, cell phones have changed society and human behavior forever. But why do we need to talk so much and to whom?

The 00s: What is this Decade All About?

It is nearly 2005, the fifth year of this decade called the 00s. But what are its defining themes and movements? What are the key trends that label and shape where we are and how we will look back on this first decade of the third millennium? The answer may be nothing yet.

What makes a review a "review"?

After experiencing a film, restaurant or new CD if someone asks what you think, you can easily provide an answer. But does that make you a critic? Most would answer “no.” They assume that to be a real reviewer you need to have a film degree or masters in English lit. or at the very least be French.

What is the Deal with the Knuckle Tap?
Can we go back to pressing the flesh?

You see Jason from Accounting at the water cooler. “What up dog?” he asks sounding more white than ever as he offers you his closed fist to tap your closed fist against. “What up” is a good question. Where did this knuckle tap greeting come from and when will it go away?

Endless Adolescence
30 is the New 20. So enjoy the Party!

Tell me if this is you: in high school were drinking, partying, getting laid and had no clue what you wanted to do with the rest of your life. Now you are nearing 30 and pretty much the same. Maybe all your friends are that way too? Society still considers you a “kid." It's okay to move back in with your folks. Go ahead quit your job and go back to school, or travel the globe to find yourself.
