VH1's Big in '05 Awards

Dec. 5 - I really love VH1. It is hard to believe that it was once known for videos not cool enough for MTV. Today it is the ultimate source of pop culture reference and analysis on TV. Best of all, unlike the celebrity fluff found in Us Weekly or Access Hollywood everything on VH1 comes with attitude, including last night's Big in '05 Awards telecast.

Who were the big winners?

Big Stylin' - Jessica Simpson

Big Breakthrough - Jeremy Piven (Entourage)

Big Entertainer - Kanye West

Big Reality Star - Bo Bice (American Idol)

Big "It Girl" - Lindsay Lohan

Big Hookup - Tom Cruse and Katie Holmes

Big Feud - Jolie v. Anniston

Big Music Artist - Green Day

In the world of VH1 the award show make sense. Danny Bonaduce was the show announcer, Bobby Brown sang live and an award went to INXS. Where else can Tom Cruise get nominated for "Entertainer of the Year" not in spite of, but because of his Oprah couch rant? Thank god for VH1. There needs to be a sense of humor about the entertainment world. It's not Meet the Press when you are covering the scandals of Paris Hilton or Britney's feet in that outhouse.

During the awards show, VH1 went to its crew of usual commentators for instant spin. It was a cool idea since most of us like to analyze or rip on awards shows anyway. It also probably took some of the steam away from bloggers intent on watercooler talk the next day. Not that it stops me. Some of my highlights were Kristin and L.C.'s (Laguna Beach) appearance, Kelis' Flashdance style hair, the "Dancing with Star Wars" skit and the closing performance by Def Leppard. Def who? You could say their performance was a nod towards VH1 geezer base, but the song they performed "Pour Some Sugar on Me" is currently big with kids too young to remember it was lame the first time around.

There is something very comforting about the tone of VH1. Not since the Old Navy ads from the late 90s has a batch of second tier has-been's and nobodies been assembled. Bonaduce, Flava Flav, Chynna Doll, the Hogans. They give the network a fuzzy feeling of a family of losers that you sort of like but feel guilty for later.
