Panic! at the VMAs
The 2006 VMAs Live Coverage

What happened at this year's MTV Video Music Awards? How about some upsets (Kanye, Red Hots shut out), emerging new artists (Panic! at the Disco, Avenged Sevenfold, Fall Out Boy) and lots of bad hip hop performances. Also there was a strange trend of odd looking new wave and goth outfits, including of course Jared Leto's Marilyn Manson schtick.
Here goes the live blogging as it happened...
Not digging Jack Black so far
I get it, Jack Black's opening sketch was supposed to fail so it would be funny in an ironic way. But without a payoff it was just his fat ass skipping across stage singing high notes. More like a Tenacious D show than a comedic performance. He does look funny though, which will make drunks and little kids laugh. I liked him best in the dressing room scene with Justin Timberlake.
Here's to him getting better as the show goes on. I think he can do it.
Blunt is Best Male?
Damn. The MTV VMA's are looking like the Emmys the other night. The first award, the Best Male Video, a major award went to James Blunt! Not Kanye who was the only worthy nominee in my opinion. But Blunt for "Beautiful." The crowd was not into, the room was flat as Blunt sounded kind of like Davey Jones of the Monkees accepting.
What's with these nominees? Is this all the last year had to offer for male performances? The Busta song is performed by at least 5 artists, so shouldn't it fall into an "entourage" category?
Best Male Video:
James Blunt -- "You're Beautiful"
Nick Lachey -- "What's Left of Me"
T.I. -- "What You Know"
Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx -- "Gold Digger"
Busta Rhymes/Lloyd Banks/Mary J. Blige/DMX/Missy Elliot/Papoose & Rah Digga -- "Touch It"
Black Eyed Peas wins Best Hip-Hop
What is happening to poor Kanye? He should have won both of the first two awards (at least against the nominated set) but Best Hip-Hop went to the Black Eyed Peas. This was a huge song so it is not surprising. But I am wondering if people forgot about "Gold Digger" because it was big a year ago?
Best Hip-Hop Video:
Black Eyed Peas -- "My Humps"
Common -- "Testify"
Daddy Yankee -- "Rompe"
Three 6 Mafia -- "Stay Fly"
Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx -- "Gold Digger"
Kelly Clarkson: an American Surprise
LL Cool J has to stop telling me to make some noise. But I am happy for Kelly Clarkson to win again (she surprised many last year) as her whole story and how she became legit after winning on Idol is really cool. I would have liked to see Madonna get it because "Hung Up" was her first good song in years.
And I think Christina A. will get tons of awards next year. The fact that both her song, which came out this summer and Kanye's, which came out last summer have me questioning the entry period.
Best Female Video:
Christina Aguilera -- "Ain't No Other Man"
Kelly Clarkson -- "Because of You"
Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland -- "Promiscuous"
Madonna -- "Hung Up"
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean -- "Hips Don't Lie"
It's the Liza Minelli of travel
Let Sarah Silverman host next year. She is one damn funny woman. Her interlude video musing on Lance Bass and ending up with "space travel is so gay" was the funnies part of the show.
I'm in love with the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls
What a beautiful woman. And to think she is reportedly dating Talan from Laguna Beach? Can that still be true? Well the Pussycat Dolls took home Best Dance video. One of the few awards where the video itself (instead of just the song) is actually important, as in the dance moves displayed decide who wins.
Best Dance Video:
Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland -- "Promiscuous"
Madonna -- "Hung Up"
Sean Paul -- "Temperature"
Pussycat Dolls feat. Snoop Dogg -- "Buttons"
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean -- "Hips Don't Lie"
OK Go okay!
Wow! The treadmill dance by OK Go was worthy of its own dance award. Especially for a group of gawky white boys. As it so happened I just watched the video today and was curious if it was shot in one take. This performance answers that maybe it was.
This isn't the first cool choreography video from them. They seem to have the market cornered actually, which is really odd when you think about it. They even have their own YouTube channel. How 00's of them!
Pink wins Pop
It's kind of been a down year for Pink. At least in terms of sales and overall popularity, which is lame as she has more outspoken than ever. She has kind of been an anti-pop star. So it's great she won this Pop award and played it off like a valley girl type.
Best Pop Video:
Christina Aguilera -- "Ain't No Other Man"
Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland -- "Promiscuous"
Madonna -- "Hung Up"
Pink -- "Stupid Girls"
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean -- "Hips Don't Lie"
Get to know Chamillionaire
The Rap award nominees favored some new up and comers, which is really cool. So good thing Houston's Chamillionaire won for "Ridin'" but maybe now ABC will come calling to reinstate his 20/20 interview.
Best Rap Video:
50 Cent -- "Window Shopper"
Busta Rhymes/Lloyd Banks/Mary J. Blige/DMX/Missy Elliot/Papoose & Rah Digga -- "Touch It"
Chamillionaire -- "Ridin'"
T.I. -- "What You Know"
Yung Joc feat. Nitti -- "It's Goin' Down"
Are the All-American Rejects a big deal?
Honestly I didn't think so. But they won the Best Group award against a really strong field. I liked all the other songs better. I thought Panic! would get it and hoped for Gnarls. I was always suspect of the Red Hot Chili Peppers seven noms, let's see if they get shut out.
Best Group Video:
All American Rejects -- "Move Along"
Fall Out Boy -- "Dance, Dance"
Gnarls Barkley -- "Crazy"
Panic! at the Disco -- "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Red Hot Chili Peppers -- "Dani California"
Ouch! Kanye can't even win Best Ringtone
Some think the idea of an award for Best Ringtone is retarded. But I think it's not a bad idea as it does reflect what people truly like to hear (time and time again all day long). It would have been bittersweet if this was the award that Kanye finally pulled down. But no, not even that was gonna happen. As Fort Minor won? Really? I didn't hear that ringtone much this summer.
Avenged Sevenfold, how do you say that?
A band that began on Headbanger's Ball just won Best New Artist. I thought for sure Panic! was getting it and that the performance right before this award was perfectly planned. By the way, there's was one of the few performances I watched instead of fast-forwarded. I have been really disappointed by the hip-hop and rap performances this year. With all the fast forwarding of live acts (I'm actually interested in the commercials) I am now caught up with the west coast feed.
Best New Artist in a Video:
Angels & Airwaves -- "The Adventure"
Avenged Sevenfold -- "Bat Country"
James Blunt -- "You're Beautiful"
Panic! at the Disco -- "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Rihanna -- "S.O.S."
Nobody cares about Britney!
Bomb. What a bigtime bomb. When they were announced by Jack Black there was silence. And then when they saw it really was Britney and K-Fed, still silence. Even the jokes playing on the white trash stereotypes of her brood fell flat. What a true sign of her being over. Sad.
Best R&B Video:
Beyonce Knowles feat. Slim Thug -- "Check On It"
Mary J. Blige -- "Be Without You"
Chris Brown -- "Yo! (Excuse Me Miss)"
Mariah Carey -- "Shake It Off"
Jamie Foxx feat. Ludacris -- "Unpredictable"
Pink Reed
Cool to have him there for musicheads, but was Lou Reed ever an MTV artist? It shows how MTV really stands for music and the culture of music over videos themselves. Of all the great indie rock bands out there why give 30 Seconds to Mars a nomination? I can't take them seriously as band.
So I'm not really a fan of the winners AFI, but they join a trend of really odd looking rockers (My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Fall-Out Boy). They are all like new wave theater performers. I think in future years they will look as funny as the glam rockers of the 1980s do to us now.
Best Rock Video:
30 Seconds to Mars -- "The Kill"
AFI -- "Miss Murder"
Green Day -- "Wake Me Up When September Ends"
Panic! at the Disco -- "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Red Hot Chili Peppers -- "Dani California"
No Hip Hop Fusion Award
Thank god that was a fake award. Hip Hop Fusion. What is that besides practically everything on the charts these days? It was set up as a way to get to the Tenacious D song (snore).
But that bit with James Blunt's "Beautiful" was a joke I had first. Those are two guys from my work btw. Not that it was that novel of a joke.
Viewers love Fall Out Boy
Of the nominees, no doubt Fall Out Boy was best. Great song with a great video that reminded me of the 1980s when cheesy high school storylines had a place in video direction.
Viewer's Choice Award:
Chris Brown -- "Run It"
Fall Out Boy -- "Dance, Dance"
Kelly Clarkson -- "Becuase of You"
Rihanna -- "S.O.S."
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean -- "Hips Don't Lie"
Btw the show is running long, thankfully I DVRed the after show too.
Why didn't this Al Gore run in 2000?
I was at first like, no they are not bringing out Al Gore. How lame. But then he made a "SexyBack" joke and pronounced some rapper names correctly. Why didn't this dude run back in 2000? He was relaxed, cool, clearly in touch with youth and will almost certainly run in 2008.
Video of the year
If the Video of the year is supposed to reflect where we are in society at that moment, as Jennifer Lopez said as she presented it, what does Panic! at the Disco say? Bizarre, colorful, flamboyant, deep and troubled?
And Six got in to steal the limelight again! He's that dude who shows up onstage to accept at different shows from time to time. He's called into Howard Stern several times about it. But this time I kind of think it was on purpose and sanctioned by MTV to appear outrageous. He had an MTV url address right?
Video of the Year:
Christina Aguilera -- "Ain't No Other Man"
Panic! at the Disco -- "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Madonna -- "Hung Up"
Red Hot Chili Peppers -- "Dani California"
Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean -- "Hips Don't Lie"
