1. Archenemy - We Will Rise
Heavy metal is back in full effect!?! I Heard this song on MTVs Headbangers
Ball (the new one not the one from the 80s.) Part of me thinks this song
sucks majorly. But I am a fan of the screaming. I sorta like bands that
have good screamers - Slayer, Mike Patton, Cannibal Corpse. I know most
people will hate this song and even more importantly music snobs will
really hate it. That is why it starts off the cd. As heavy as this song
is, it has a very catchy almost pop hook to it. It sticks in my head and
again big plusses for the screaming. Screaming shocks the parents and
that's a good thing for rock and roll.
2. Usher - Yeah
New pop hit. Pretty throwaway and I doubt in a year from now I'll be interested
in hearing it. An obvious influence is Michael Jackson circa the early
80s. Pretty infectious beat. I think I heard this song being played at
a mall the other day.
3. Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
Hey is that the Red Hot Chili Peppers singing? Or a sample? This sounds
like a remix. A good party song.
4. Jay Z - Encore (The Grey Album)
Okay I really like this song and the album, which is by Washington DJ
Danger Mouse. It's a mash up between Jay Z's "Black Album" and
The Beatles "White Album." Thus "Grey." Mash ups are
everywhere now, they can be created by anyone on a home computer. This
one has purpotedly sold thousands, enough so that a cease and desist has
been served by The Beatles record label. This track samples key sounds
from The Beatles "Glass Onion" and "Savoy Truffle",
most notably the Lennon wail "Ohh yeah."
5. Beyonce - Me, Myself and I (remix)
This begins the part of the mix where I put in the easy grooves. Songs
that remind me of driving around during the summertime, on the way to
somewhere fun or to visit a girl. They are easy to listen to and make
me smile. Safe, innocuous pop songs. This is a remix of the new Beyonce
single. I like the verses more than the chorus and prefer this remix with
the background beat.
6. Kelis - Attention (with Raphael Saadiq)
The Kelis cd "Tasty" is really good. Lots of different moods
from producers like the Neptunes. This song is very smooth, very upbeat
and fits well within this block.
7. Musiq - Forthenight
In addition to the groove, I like the lyrics on this song. "Let's
pretend for one night, I am the man in your life.." Not as good as
his 2001 single "Half Crazy" but I still wish I could sing like
this dude. Very catchy chorus too.
8. The Cure - Close To Me (Closer Mix)
Falls into the retro surprise category. This is from 1991's "Mixed
Up" collection but all Cure fans know the original song is from the
mid 80s. A great song, this remix removes some the trumpets from the end
of the song, making it a bit more serious to fit onto my mix cd.
9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
Channeling Chrissy Hynde and The Pretenders, this is the best song on
their cd, one that music critics fawned all over last year.
10. Kelis - Millionaire (with Andre 3000)
I really like Andre 3000 and want to watch where he goes after Outkast.
He adds a really cool vocal and melody to this song, which sound more
like a missing track from "The Love Below" than a Kelis song.
Another reason why the Kelis cd is worth having.
11. Eamon - Fuck It (Don't Want You Back)
Doesn't this song sound like something you have heard many times before?
If it wasn't for all the cursing (the name of the song is "Fuck it"
after all), this would work great on the O.C. or Gilmore Girls TV shows.
I like it but will probably be over it in like 6 months.
12. Elephant Man - Bun Down Stop Hitch
Fast Jamaican style rap, with more gangsta attitude than Sean Paul. Listening
to the whole cd got on my nerves after a while and all the songs began
to sound alike. But this song had good energy and was a good representative
of Elephant Man.
13. Twista - Slow Jamz
The comedian Jamie Foxx is listed on the credits for this song. I think
he is singing the chorus "Some Marvin Gaye, some Luther Vandross."
Why him? Any halfway decent singer could have pulled it off. They are
calling this Twista's first big single, but does he deserve the credit?
His rap is okay, but I like the overall groove of the song complete with
the chick singing sampling. I hope Jamie Foxx isn't going to go all Eddie
Murphy! Remember "Party all the time?"
14. Big Gipp - Steppin' Out (with Sleepy Brown)
I found this song when searching for Sleepy Brown. He is the singer in
"The Way You Move" by Outkast. The tall dude with the ruffled
shirts and sunglasses. I wanted to see if he ever cut an album. I ony
found this song. I don't know who Big Gipp is but I like it anyway.
15. Maroon 5 - This Love
Another song that sounds like I've heard a million times before. But it
is new and apparently Maroon 5 has some buzz going. Sounds very classic.
Elton John in the 70s or some 80s band. They're probably British.
16. Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body, Rock
This song is okay. I like the robotic voices but it is too techno beat
heavy for me to really like. It has been getting good club play so I put
it here to see if it would grow on me. Still waiting.
17. Benny Banassi - This Love
Same as the last song, a club hit that has buzz but is too long and boring
for me to truly embrace. Some people will really love it though.
