The August Mixtape
{Previous
Mixes}
For those curious, there was no July mixtape reflecting
a fairly vacant month for new music. A few tracks stood
out like the new single from Depeche Mode "Precious"
from their forthcoming studio album, a remix of a jazz
standard by Carmen McRea, which has been a staple of
KCRW's Weekend
Becomes Eclectic, and the tracks from Alkaline
Trio, Team Sleep and Billy Corgan ("Strayz" which evokes
The Cure's Disintegration).
But in the last week there have been some great
new tunes. My favorite being
the L.A. duo She Wants Revenge, a dancier Interpol
with a song that is likely going to be huge - "Out of
Control." They are signed to Fred Durst's label. But
don't hold that against them as they are ones to watch. The
Audio Bullys, who were a 2003 favorite, return
with a new album this October. Their "Keep
on Moving" is a thoughtful rap over a heart of
groove that sounds like The Streets mixed
with Ice Cube's "It
Was a Good Day." Röyksopp's new album The Understanding is
fueling the summer with both instrumental and vocal-driven
moods like in the standout "What Else is There?" with
guest singer Karin Dreijer.
