Vendetta Ice: 1st Quarter 2006 Box Office Report
How wrong I was! A few weeks ago I was sure that V for Vendetta would become the first big movie of the year. That honor went to Ice Age 2 instead. more

Oscar Crash
Crash surprised many with the Best Picture award. As for the telecast and John Stewart's performance, I enjoyed this year more than most. He was calm and comfortable. I thought his opening monologue was so-so, but redeemed by many witty one-liners and observations throughout the ceremony. Read more

2006 Movie Preview
Here is the Culture Drift guide to the films of 2006. In some ways they show a return to form. Golden Globes
It was shtick theater with many of the acceptance speeches the purposely laid back Golden Globes awards. George Clooney kicked it off with a "jack off" joke, Hugh Laurie (House) fished puns from his trouser pocket and Steve Carrell reminded us of his Daily Show roots. What else happened? Who won and how did I do in my predictions?

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Review
When I was in fifth grade, there was this weird kid who said he was an alien and if my friend and I met him Thursday after school, he would take us hitchhiking into outer space. He said to bring a towel and tell no one. There would be a cool restaurant at the end of the universe, where we would buy some sort of special drink with a long name. We knew he was nuts, but for a second imagined the thrill of leaping into the night, through space to have all kinds of Han Solo-type adventures. That was my introduction to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Music Tales: The Next Wave of Musician Biopics
The lurid and lavish lifestyles of rock stars are tailored made for the screen. The success of Ray brings to mind other artists that could fit the same template and who should play them.

Movie Short Notes
A new generation of "American Pie" movies with Stifler's younger brother. Without an actual pie in the film, does the title fit? Tom Cruise and Speilberg abandon their current projects to be together (on a film you pervs). A new version of H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" The top choice to play the new Flash Gordon is Ashton Kutcher? Will Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy" direct the next "X-Men"?

Classic "Manchurian Candidate" Returns Before Remake

Every time Hollywood remakes a film, or turns a TV series into a film, there is the requisite DVD release of the original source material. In some cases it causes one to scratch their head like the "Starsky and Hutch" box set. Other times it is cause for celebration. Such is the case for the July 13 DVD release of "The Manchurian Candidate" from 1962.

Bond, James Bond: The Actors
I love James Bond movies and virtually grew up on them. The "best" James Bond movie would be one that melds together the best parts of all the films: the villains, the girls, the locations, the chase scenes, the henchmen, and even the different actors that played 007.
